Questions People Ask

Q. My friend says that Catholics have dropped the commandment about worshipping carved images because they worship statues and holy pictures. Is this true?
A. We have not dropped any of the ten commandments although we usually recite a shortened version of the first, third and fourth. The substance of each of these is retained. The reference to carved images is already contained in the sentence: ‘You shall not have strange (false) gods before me.’ A statue, crucifix or picture may be used to focus our attention in prayer or express our devotion, but it would be against our faith to worship or adore that object. God alone is to be adored

Feast days this week
Mon 20th: St Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This year it is celebrated on March 20. St Joseph is patron of households and of many countries.
Tues 21st: St Enda, Abbot. He made several monastic foundations in the Boyne Valley as well as on the Aran Islands. He died around 520.
Thurs 23rd: St Turibius of Mongrovejo, a Spanish layman who was made bishop of Lima in Peru. He died in 1606.
Fri 24th: St Macartan, first Bishop of Clogher, a disciple of St Patrick, known as ‘St Patrick’s strong man’ because of his fidelity to the Christian faith.
Sat 25th: The Annunciation of the Lord. This feast used to be known in Ireland as Lá ’le Muire san Earrach. Today we celebrate the great moment when Mary said ‘yes’ to God’s redeeming plan for all peoples. At that moment ‘the Word became flesh and lived among us’.

To all volunteers in the Parish!
In St. Matthew’s Parish many people give freely of their time and talents in the life of the Parish. We hope to invite these people to special Masses at the end of March/early April as a gesture of appreciation for the great work that they (“YOU”) do. We counted over 300 people and probably have excluded some. As you know it’s quite difficult to name all who do so much in the parish, both inside the church and in the community.
On Tuesday 28th we hope to invite all those linked with “money” i.e. the collectors of the family offering week in – week out, the counters on a Monday night and those who count the Sunday collections. On Thursday 30th we invite all those who committed themselves to helping at the different Masses since last Advent. On Tuesday 4th April we hope to invite Church cleaners/ ministers of the Eucharist / Music ministry… (choir /folk group/ children’s group)/ readers/ sacristans & existing stewards.  Finally on Thursday 6th April we extend an invitation to all others who are connected with the prayer life and action of the Parish. Hosts of the Lenten & Advent house groups/ Monday Meditation group/ Eucharistic Adoration steering committee/ Wednesday Divine Mercy leaders/ Baptism Faith friends/ Bereavement Group/ Liturgy group/ Padre Pio group leaders/ Spred leaders/ St. Vincent de Paul confraternities/ Parish Centre volunteers/ Little Flower club & St. Mary’s old folk Club leaders/ St Mary’s Youth club & Gurteen Youth club leaders/ Even now I notice that some groups have been overlooked – apologies to those people. You too are welcome to come that night. You are invited to attend 7.30 Mass that evening and light refreshments in the Parish Centre afterwards.
