St Matthew's Parish Notes

Second Sunday of Easter / Divine Mercy
Sunday, 04th April, 2005

  Pope John Paul II

This weekend brings the news of the Pope’s imminent death. TV is filled with clips of people praying for him. The impact that he had on the whole world, Catholic, Christian and indeed even the wider world. A man with great energy in good health and now great example and strength in sickness.

As well as praying for him it is a time to share our memories and faith with our young people.

Extract from the Pope’s message for Easter Sunday: “Jesus, Crucified and Risen, stay with us! Stay with us, faithful friend and sure support for humanity on its journey through history!... Bread of eternal life, nourish those who hunger for truth, freedom, justice and peace”

Questions people ask

Q. What is the meaning of Alleluia and why were there no Alleluias during Lent?

A. Alleluia is a joyful shout in Hebrew, meaning ‘Praise God’. When Clare hurlers triumphed in 1995 the country was introduced to the ‘Clare Shout’, a wild release of celebration. It reminded me of the origins of Alleluia, an uninhibited cry of God’s praise, Allelu-Yah (short form of Yahweh, Hebrew name for God). In the subdued atmosphere of Lent the use of Alleluia is not appropriate. Its absence for six weeks makes us appreciate its return at Easter all the more.

Feast Days during the Week

Mon 4 th: The Annunciation of the Lord. This feast, normally celebrated on March 25, is transferred this year because of the timing of Easter. The angel’s visit to Mary, and her response, ‘Let it be done unto me according to your word’ changed the course of history and began the Christian era.

Tue 5 th: St Vincent Ferrer, a Spanish Dominican who lived in the fourteenth century and was renowned for his preaching.
Thurs 7 th: St John Baptist de la Salle. Born in France in 1651, he devoted his life to the Christian education of the poor, and founded a congregation to continue his work. He died in Rouen in 1719. (Patron of our secondary school – St. John’s college).
