St Matthew's Parish Notes

Twenty Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time
Sunday, 17th October, 2004

Questions people ask

Q. What is the significance of the different colours of vestments at Mass?

A. Green, the colour of growth, is used for most Sundays and weekdays. Green is used unless there is some reason to change. Red, the colour of love, is used for the Holy Spirit, for the Sacred Heart or for the blood of martyrs. White is used at Easter and for saints other than martyrs. Purple signifies temperance and penance, so it is used in Advent and Lent. Black vestments, once used for funerals, are rarely used nowadays. Instead, white may be used to express resurrection, or purple for mourning.

Mission Sunday

Next Sunday is Mission Sunday. "Two thousand years since the start of Mission, there are still vast geographical, cultural, human and social areas which have not yet been penetrated by Christ and His Gospel" (Pope John Paul II). Support the missionary activity of the Church by prayer, offering of suffering and a generous financial contribution .

Year of the Eucharist (Oct 04 – 05)

There is a constant call for prayer in today's world and yet we often choose to ignore this call. A very special way of prayer is before the Blessed Sacrament. In St. Matthew's each Friday people have the chance to come and pray with Jesus before us on the altar. Exposition takes place from 10.30 - 7.30pm.
