Bertie – We owe Religious a huge debt
It's nice to see a bit of praise for the Irish “visionary priests, nuns and brothers” given by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in Rome last week after signing the EU Constitution which, unfortunately, has had certain controversy in its absence of reference to the Christian roots of the nations that make up the EU.
This week's “Irish Catholic” has more details about his speech. He spoke of the position that the church has in society and the values that it and other religious movements have in continue to encourage in today's society. The religious in Ireland have a vital role in working for social justice. A prophetic voice challenging the modern individualism that threatens to undermine our society.
Sex Scandals
He went on to comment on the hurt caused and felt by many. Also he spoke of the danger to tar with the one brush and overlook the enormous good work and contribution of so many religious across Ireland and indeed the whole world.
The comments of Mr Ahern will help encourage many religious in Ireland today and will help to re-engender hope in many.
(This article is in The Irish Catholic which costs only 80cent. Much cheaper that many other Sunday papers, it has by and large better content. Perhaps you might buy a copy and share it around your family) Pope's intentions for November
Prayer intention is: "That Christian men and women, aware of their vocation in the Church, may answer generously to God's call to seek holiness in the midst of their lives."
His missionary intention is: " That all those who work in the missions may never forget that personal holiness and intimate union with Christ are the source of the efficacy of evangelisation." Feastdays
Tue 9 th : The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. This is the Cathedral of the Pope, Bishop of Rome.
Wed 10 th : St Leo the Great , Pope and Doctor of the Church. He organised church government in Rome, wrote on matters of doctrine, and is remembered especially for his teaching at the Council of Chalcedon on the two natures of Christ. He died in 461.
Thurs 11 th : St Martin of Tours , Bishop. First came to France as a Roman soldier. One night he met a shivering beggar. He cut his own cloak in two and gave half to the poor man. Afterwards he had a vision of Christ dressed in the clothing he had given. This led him to the Christian faith.
Fri 12 th : St Josaphat , Bishop and Martyr. A native of the Ukraine, he became a monk and a noted theologian and preacher. He was murdered in 1623.
Remember Our Dead
During the week a great number turned out for the Mass on Tuesday night & up in Palmerstown Cemetery on Wednesday showing us a great tradition or praying for our dead.
Yet in the midst of this we have the sad opposite. In Esker cemetery headstones were vandalised and in Cloiginn Rd/Ave the headstone erected in memory of their deceased was vandalised. A sad state of affairs indeed.
