St Matthew's Parish Notes

The Third Sunday of Lent
Sunday, 14th March 2004

Questions people ask
Q. Is it true that when people have accidents or a run of bad luck it is a sign that God is punishing them for past sins?
A. I have heard people make that claim but it is not the teaching of Jesus. See his response in today's gospel. The victims of Pilate's savagery and those who perished when a tower collapsed were no worse than other people. God might permit something to happen to bring people to their senses in a lovingly corrective way. But God is not in the business of doling out punishment. Rather, as the psalm puts it, the Lord is compassion and love.

Novena Of Grace
Finished last Friday. Our thanks to all who made this time a time of special prayer in the parish. To all who helped out - a special thank you. Preachers, sacristans, music ministry (both morning and evening), readers, stewards, candle & flower minders, sales people, volunteers on day of prayer for healing and forgiveness. (For those who were there on Monday, how's your gas cooker?) Finally a sincere word of praise to all who attended and prayed the novena to St Francis (many at home). Please God through St. Francis's intercession many graces and blessings will be granted to the people of our parish.
