St Matthew's Parish Notes

Holy Trinity Sunday
Sunday, 6th June, 2004

Questions people ask
Q. Why can't we have just a simple idea of God without the complications of the three divine persons?
A. Well, if something is true it is better to recognise it. We need some understanding of the Blessed Trinity to appreciate how Jesus was sent by the Father and returned to the Father: and to appreciate the role of the Holy Spirit. At Mass, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we join with Jesus who took our human nature to himself, went through death and resurrection, in his return to the Father. We render all glory to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

25th anniversary of Ordination
It may come as a surprise to many but Fr Roy Donovan is celebrating 25 years of priesthood this week. This is a special occasion for him and his family and our parish. Fr Roy wants the event to be kept on a low key but to mark the occasion we invite you to join with us in a Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday next (12th @ 6.30pm) with him.
We have been privileged to have Fr Roy with us here in St. Matthew's almost 5 of those years. He has brought with him his own gifts and talents that many have experienced first hand.
Wishing him many more years of happiness with us here in Ballyfermot. Congratulations Roy on this special occasion in your life. Thank God for you!

Feastdays
Mon 7th: St Colman is associated with Dromore, Co Down. It is probable that he studied under Caetan, and settled in Dromore around ad 514.
Wed 9th: St Columba, abbot and renowned missionary, is recognised, with Patrick and Brigid, as Patron of Ireland. Born in Gartan, Co Donegal, he studied under Finnian of Moville and Finnian of Clonard. He founded monasteries in Durrow, Derry, (possibly Kells?) and Iona in Scotland, where he died in 597A.D.
The Feast of St Ephraem, deacon and Doctor of the Church is also celebrated today. He is famous for his teaching on the Eucharist.
Fri 11th: St Barnabas, apostle. Companion to Paul, Barnabas is one of the first great missionaries in the early church. His name means 'encourager'. With Paul he took part in the Council of Jerusalem. Then he returned to his native Cyprus, where he died.
