Q.
As a busy housewife I always feel sorry for Martha who did
all the work while her sister enjoyed the Lord's company.
Somebody has to do the work. Isn't this my vocation?
A. Vocation is the right word for your life and work. Always
remember that Martha is venerated as a saint with her own
feast on July 29th. There are times when sitting with the
Lord in prayer or study is the better part but there are other
times when doing your job is what the Lord wants. Best of
all is to get the right balance between work and prayer.

Welcoming Jesus
Today's story of the two sisters, Mary and Martha, shows that
Jesus needed friends as much as we do. He needed to get away
from it all from time to time and relax. He could do this at
their home in Bethany where he was always made welcome. He enjoyed
Martha's hospitality and her cooking, but he appreciated even
more the fact that Mary was willing to sit down, listen to him,
and spend time with him. We spend time with Jesus when we pray.
Activity: Thinking about today's Gospel, write a prayer to Jesus
and use it every day.
Feastdays
Tues 20th: St Appolinaris, a second-century saint who preached
the gospel in Ravenna. He died a martyr at Classis. In the Byzantine
calendar, Elijah the Prophet is honoured today.
Wed 21st: St Lawrence of Brindisi, a Capuchin friar who preached
during the Counter-Reformation.
Thur 22nd: St Mary Magdalene. She is known as the 'apostle to
the apostles' because she was brought the news of the resurrection
to the apostles.
Fri 23rd: St Bridget. She is a patron saint of Sweden and patroness
of Europe.
Sat 24th: St Declan of Ardmore. He evangelised west Waterford
before St Patrick came to Ireland.
