Wedding
Feast of Cana -Things can change
A strange place to begin a mission, we might think. A party.
No palsied limb healed, sight restored or dead raised. Just
a group of wedding guests, with at least some of them too
inebriated to know what had happened. No press release or
media handler. A backyard miracle at a wedding celebration
in the small town of Cana in Galilee. And there was no great
reaction afterwards. He, Mary and the disciples returning
home quietly. A miracle wasted? Free drink for free-loaders?
Just an act of kindness to help out an embarrassed couple?
More than that surely! A birth in a hick town, a teenager
for a mother. A father with dreams for guidance and confused
about his own place in it all. In all those years of silence,
both Mary and he working to make ends meet.
Private, domestic, ordinary. It was appropriate that his launch
began at a family occasion.
God chooses ordinary, unexpected places to appear.
Often where and when you least expect. Recognise him in the
ordinariness of your life, your family, your acquaintances.
Whenever things run in short supply: the wine of strength,
unity, friendship, hope, pardon - and of course love - turn
to him. With a domestic miracle, he's telling us of the miracle
of the ordinary all around.
We like to think we know better. But do we?

Feast
days during the week
Tue 20th: St Fabian, pope and martyr. Also St Sebastian.
Wed 21st: St Agnes, virgin and martyr. Patron of bethrothed
couples, gardeners and young girls.
Thur 22nd: St Vincent, deacon and martyred in 304 in Spain.
Sat 24th: St Francis de Sales, Bishop of Geneva. Died AD 1622.
Even though his father had a great career planned for him, Francis
just wanted to preach the Gospel. He worked in Switzerland,
where he produced pamphlets to help people understand their
faith. Francis became bishop of Geneva soon after the Reformation:
his gentle ministry there won many people over. He loved to
preach and write, and wanted to help ordinary people become
holy. Because of this ability, he is the patron of writers,
journalists and editors.
