People Ask
Q.
In today's gospel we read that the disciples of Jesus did
not fast. Why, then are we asked to fast during Lent?
A. Jesus did not condemn fasting. In fact we read of
one long period of fasting in preparation for his public ministry.
But he did not make fasting the 'be all and end all' of religion.
He promoted joy and celebration, especially in meals shared
together. It's a matter of getting the balance right between
penance and feasting. There is a time to fast and a time to
celebrate.

Feastdays
Wed 5th: Ash Wednesday: The first day of Lent. Ashes are
blessed and distributed, reminders of the shortness of life
and the urgency of repentance.
A Day of Fast and Abstinence. Fasting means that the amount
of food we eat is considerably reduced. Abstinence means that
we give up a particular kind of food or drink or form of amusement.
Those over 18 are bound by the law of fasting until 60, while
all over 14 are bound by the law of abstinence.
Fri 7th: Saints Perpetua & Felicity, two women arrested
and martyred in northern Africa.
Sat 8th: St Senan. He was born at Kilrush, Co Clare and founded
a monastery on an island in the Shannon estuary.
St John of God is also remembered today (patron of nurses, the
sick heart patients, printers and booksellers).
Lent
Lent is a time of penance and renewal of one's commitment
to God in preparation for Easter. Some suggestions might
include: giving alms, abstinence from some foods or other
pleasures, controlling our desires for possessions and/or
for entertainment. |
