Questions People
Ask
Q. Is Advent supposed to be a penitential season,
a sort of 'mini-Lent'?
A. Although the purple vestments of penance are used
during Advent, the season is more about hope and joy than penance.
The dominant theme is the hope which comes from reflecting on
the nearness of the Lord to us at all times. However, a bit
of penance or self-denial would be good for soul and body in
the run-up to Christmas.
Saint Paul tells us to rejoice for the Lord is near.
Come, Lord Jesus, come!

Advent Activities (Cont'd)
Prayer Groups for Advent
Reflection sheets will be available each week at the back
of the church. Invite a neighbour or two into your home and
use the leaflets to help in a prayerful reflection on the past
Sunday's readings.
Advent Meditations - How to actually meditate
On Mondays from 8.15 - 9.15 in the Council Room with Fr.
Roy Using music, relaxation, stillness and John Main approach.
All are welcome.
Visit the Church during Advent
Every Friday the Church is open for people who wish to
come and pray or just sit in the quiet, peaceful atmosphere
for a few minutes or longer.
Morning Prayer
If you go to daily Mass perhaps you'd like to be in the
Church before 9.50 and join in the Morning Prayer.
Music at Morning Mass
During Advent we will have singing at Monday/ Wednesday &
Friday Morning Mass.
Penance Service
On Friday there will be a penance service at morning
Mass and at 7.30 a special Penitential Service. A great
way to make our peace with God as part of our preparations
for Christmas when we celebrate Christ's birth. Bring
a friend! They may want to go but need the little bit
of encouragement. |
Toy Sunday
This will take place this weekend (15/16th) December.
A special appeal is made to all especially the young to
donate some good quality or new toys that could be shared
with children who otherwise would have nothing this Christmas.
(There is no need to wrap the toys, as the St Vincent
de Paul volunteers will have to sort through them any
way) |

Feast
days
Wednesday 18 - St Flannan, abbot of Killabe
Friday 20 - St Fachanan of Kilfenora
Saturday 21 - St Peter Canisius, 1521-1597
When Peter was young, his father wanted him to be a lawyer.
Instead, he joined the Jesuits. He attended sessions of the
Council of Trent. Later he helped people understand what it
taught, through the catechisms he wrote. People came in large
numbers to hear Peter preach. Even though he spent a lot of
time studying and writing, he also found time to visit the sick
and prisoners.
In his old age, Peter was paralysed by a stroke. But he kept
on writing. He is considered a founder of the Catholic press.
Peter Canisius, you helped people understand their faith:
Pray for us!
Cribs
Have you got a crib put up at home? The tree, the neon
lights etc are very popular yet some homes have forgotten their
crib. Have they forgotten Jesus? |
