Parish History
St. Matthew's Parish compromises of 2,500 houses - 1,800 of which
are in Ballyfermot and almost 700 are in Palmerstown.
The following is a brief history of its development.
- 1972
- St. Matthew's made a separate parish from The Assumption Parish,
Ballyfermot.
- 1974
- Church officially opened by Archbishop Ryan on 22nd December.
It was one of the least expensive Churches built to accommodate
912 people and paid for with no assistance from SHARE.
- 1980
- Palmerstown Court estate was added to the parish.

1990's - Palmerstown Manor, Whitethorn and Kennelsfort Green were
built.

1998 - St. Matthew's Parish Centre opened by President Mary McAlease
and blessed by Bishop Raymond Field on St. Valentines Day (14th
February).

1999 - St. Matthew's celebrated its Silver Jubilee by welcoming
back past priests of the parish for a week of celebrations and
launching a special book to mark the occasion.
- 1999
- Peace/Jubilee Garden officially used at Christmas Eve Mass.
(24th December)
- 2000
- Jubilee year in the Christian Calendar marked in St. Matthew's
a special New Year's Eve Vigil. Throughout the year various pilgrimages
took place to Ballintubber, Co. Mayo, Knock, Lourdes and Fatima.
To
date St. Matthew's has had a new sound system installed; The central
heating system has been replaced; The roof has undergone major renovation
and Stained Glass windows have been fitted (designed by Ciaran Mooney).
These plus other minor additions have contributed greatly to making
St. Matthew's the vibrant parish that it is.
